Bringing a new baby into the world is one of life’s biggest milestones, and deciding how you want to remember those first few days can feel overwhelming. One question I hear often from expecting parents is:
“Should we book a hospital newborn session or wait until we’re home?”
The truth is, there’s no right or wrong answer. Both hospital and in-home newborn photography beautifully tell the story of your baby’s arrival—they just capture different chapters.
As a Northeast Ohio newborn photographer, my goal is always the same: to document your family’s story honestly, without forcing moments that don’t feel like you.
Hospital newborn sessions (sometimes called Fresh 48 sessions) take place within the first 24–48 hours after your baby is born, usually before you head home.
These sessions focus on preserving all the little details that disappear faster than you expect.
Think:
The room doesn’t have to be perfectly clean, and you definitely don’t need to be “camera ready.”
Those first hours are real—and that’s exactly what makes them so meaningful.

There’s something incredibly special about documenting your baby exactly as they entered the world.
These sessions capture memories like:
Years from now, you’ll probably care far less about the hospital bed in the background than you do about remembering how impossibly tiny your baby was.
In-home newborn sessions usually happen within the first two weeks after birth, although they can absolutely be done later.
Instead of documenting the birth story itself, these sessions capture what everyday life looks like as you settle into your new normal.
You’ll spend time cuddling on the couch, rocking your baby in the nursery, feeding them, reading books with older siblings, or simply soaking in those quiet moments together.
Your home becomes part of your family’s story.
Many parents love waiting until they’re home because it allows everyone to slow down a little. There isn’t the hustle of nurses coming in or medical equipment around the room. Instead, your session feels relaxed and familiar.
Some of my favorite images come from families curled up together on their own bed with the morning light pouring through the window. They’re simple, honest moments that often become the photographs families treasure most.

Honestly?
Neither.
They’re simply different. A hospital newborn session tells the story of how your baby arrived. An in-home session tells the story of what life looked like once your family began settling in together.
If you’re someone who loves documenting every milestone, you might even choose both.
One of the biggest concerns parents have is whether they’ll still want photographs if labor is difficult, they’re recovering from a C-section, or their baby spends time in the NICU. My answer is always the same:
There is no “perfect” birth story.
Whether your delivery is exactly what you imagined or completely unexpected, your baby’s story is still worth remembering. Some of the most meaningful images I’ve ever seen have come from moments that weren’t easy.
Your photographs don’t have to hide the hard parts—they can gently honor them.
It’s best to reserve your session during your second trimester or early in your third trimester. We’ll use your due date as a placeholder and adjust the session once your baby arrives.
That’s completely normal! Newborn photographers expect babies to arrive on their own schedule, and we’ll work together to find the best date after your little one is here.
Not at all. For in-home sessions, I look for the best natural light and may move a few small items if needed, but your home doesn’t need to look like it belongs in a magazine. The goal is to capture your family as you are.
Soft, neutral colors and comfortable clothing photograph beautifully. The focus should stay on your connection with one another—not matching outfits or stiff poses.
Whether you choose a hospital newborn session or an in-home lifestyle session, what matters most is preserving this season exactly as it felt. Because one day your tiny newborn will be running through your house, and you’ll wonder how they were ever so small. Photographs have a way of bringing you back to those moments.
If you’re expecting and looking for a Cleveland newborn photographer, I’d love to help you document your family’s story in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and true to you.
